Conventional film radiography is used for inspecting pipework welds as it does not suffer problems caused by grain boundary issues. Yet this technique does require long exposure times. It also only provides a 2D image of the 3D structure, which means that depth cannot be gauged, defects may be masked by other features and that planar defects can only be detected if oriented parallel to the radiation beam.
