Science View supports an innovative theatrical play titled “Are we getting some sleep tonight or what?” about the mechanisms of sleep and the brain. The play is produced by Science Art Society and is staged at Altera Pars Theater (map), Athens, Monday-Thursday for schools during school hours and on Saturdays 5.00 p.m. for the general public.
The show started running on the 8th of November 2014, while the official opening and press conference preceding it successfully took place on 15th November 2014. Attendance was very high and the audience’s response engaged and enthusiastic.
Using humour, daily life situations and scientific accuracy the play helps the viewer understand the mechanisms that promote and inhibit sleep. It also presents in detail the stages of sleep and their impact on the body’s normal functions and general health as well as on memory and learning.
Before and after each performance a specialist researcher will discuss with the audience the importance of sleep, sleep disorders and ways of dealing with them, opening an interactive bridge of communication between pupils, teachers and the general public with Neuroscience.
The play aims to help the general audience approach scientific topics concerning human health but also to highlight an innovative teaching approach to the didactics of science. It also hopes to be an example of a creative, entertaining combination of science and art.

A sneak peek at the play
The BODY (teenage girl) has not slept enough for three days. Today she decides to throw a house party to have fun with her friends. The brain is facing an emergency. The THALAMUS and HYPOTHALAMUS must come up with an intelligent plan in order to fight the “friends of vigilance” with the help of the “friends of sleep”. When they finally manage to take the BODY to sleep their troubles are far from over. At every stage of sleep they must make sure that everything is going accordingly to plan. While the BODY is sleeping many surprising things happen and they must work together so that in the end they can enjoy a nice dream!
The play was written by Anastasios Bonakis (Neurology Lecturer) and Petros Alatzas (Actor and Chemist), who also directed it. Main actors are Petros Alatzas (HYPOTHALAMUS), Nikos Pantelidis (THALAMUS) and Lia Tsana (BODY).
It has been approved and runs under the auspice of the Hellenic Clinical Neurophysiology Society, the Hellenic Sleep Research Society, the Panhellenic Union of Bioscientists and the Hellenic Society for Neuroscience. It is also sponsored by the Hellenic Clinical Neurophysiology Society, produced by non-profit Science Art Society and supported by Science View.
